Rabbit for dinner? Don't worry, at the Usagi-to-Cafe in Nagoya, Japan, the bunnies aren't the main course -- they're dining companions, New Tang Dynasty Television reports.
Pet-friendly apartments are hard to find in Japan's crowded cities, so cafes have begun to fill the pet void by letting customers play with furry critters while they sip and snack. Cat cafes were the first to spring up, but now enterprising cafe owners have moved on to fuzzy bunnies. Usagi-to-Cafe ("The Rabbit and Cafe") keeps 18 bunnies that visitors can cuddle after they've finished noshing on bagels, curries, and chocolate bunnies.
And for those who own lonely rabbits in need of a playmate? The cafe has a BYOB policy as well -- Bring Your Own Bunny, obviously.

Petting animals while you eat? Just the smell alone .......ugh!
My father was fed white rabbit meat while he was in the hospital recovering from a heart attack. When he returned home he followed his doctor's adivce to take up a hobby and he started raising New Zeland Whites. We ended up with 11 does, 1 buck and a bunch of babies. Their manure smelled if it was a particularly humid day or if it rained, but the animals were kept ub raised pens with hutches and there was no smell to the rabbits at all! They were fastidious in thier cleanliness.
However, I don't really think petting a rabbit (or any other animal) while eating is a particularly good idea.
DAW how cute! Though rabbits aren't the best-smelling animals around...
Rachel, what planet are you from? Bunnies don't smell! They don't have any sort of body odor, and since they always clean their teeth by nibbling on veggies they also don't have offensive breath. And I don't think that the restaurant owners keep them in dirty cages either. Matter of fact, bunnies are easily potty-trained, just like cats, and will use a litter box. How do I know this? We used to have a bunny, and they make great pets. Due to their docile nature they are suited even for small children or children who are usually scared of animals.
Squiggles, I am sorry that you were offended by my comment, But being a Chef, it is not common for me to be around them in their live form. No offence
Bunnies well kept don't smell at all. I had an all white rabbit with bright pink eyes so I named him Pink Floyd. He would sit on the table while I studied in college and I'd ask him what his opinion of social contract and it's influence upon revolutionary America :) He didn't say much but he was good company. He also liked beer and pizza. But he wasn't allowed to go to Pizza Hut with me. He didn't mind as he preferred micro brews and they didn't stock the one he likes. Go figure.
our bunny was always clean and smelled like vanilla, ate cookie, watched TV and sat on the arm of the sofa with his head on the page of the book I was reading. Litter trained too. A great companion.
I think that as long as the rabbits get cared for and are kept well fed and healthy it's a great idea! I don't know where these specific bunnies came from, but it would be really great if the cafe would adopt a few bunnies from shelters if they haven't already.
Yeah, right. This is because the Japanese are such animal lovers. They love them some whale. And they love them some dolphin. And you bet, just let them get a hold of a tiger or a bear or any other animal that they believe can give them good luck or a hard pecker. Yep they love them some animals.
I raise and breed rabbits and I think this is a quite weird idea. Not sure what to say about it. I just hope they take good care of all those rabbits. That is quite a bit for a restaurant. I have 18 rabbits myself.
Rabbits do NOT smell. Its their manure that does but if you clean it then it doesn't smell. They are very clean, just like cats, and bathe themselves and they can be potty trained. Several of mine are.
It is NOT the manure that smells but rather the urine. It has a great deal of amonia that is produced and can be neutralized with white vinegar. However, keeping the cages clean eliminates that problem. I use throw away generic chux pads in all of the cages and litter boxes with 1/2 inch mesh screens so they don't sit in it. Their butts stay clean and it's easy to clean up without much trouble at all.
Well, let me tell you this would be a great idea for all the 20,000 plus bunnies in Greater Las Vegas! My Vet says there is a terrible problem with people thinking we're cute only to discover we need to be loved and cared for just like a dog or cat. Yes, I'm litter box trained. Candi and I are very well cared for, had the best check-up so far. I'm five and a half and Candi is two and a half. this would be soo cool to be a part of. Our pet parents take us on outings to the parks in the cooler months. Our cages are not at all smelly and we clean ourselves all day long. Candi gets my back and behind my ears and I do the same for her. We're a bonded pair that does everything together. We love our home and would find it fun to see this happen in our community too.
I hope the woman whose father raised rabbits didn't eat them! I myself took care of one during a summer I was in high school and it was mean and bit and wasn't socialized at all. In spite of that, I own my own bunny now-he is SUCH a sweetheart! You can do whatever you want to him and he won't bite at all. I took care of another bunny last summer and it was mean too! It makes me feel really lucky that I have such a great one. I've had mine since he was only 2 months old. He's now 6 years old. I love the way he smells. I like this idea, as long as the bunnies are in another room, separate from the diners (it mentions they pet them after dinner). If not, imagine all the hair flying around, especially if they're shedding! Ech! I hope they're all fixed and I hope if anyone brings their bunny in, that they're fixed. Definitely don't want tons and tons of bunnies!
Skittles-are you a boy? I was thinking about getting a girl rabbit for my boy but given that he's 6 and has been alone since he was 3 months old, I'm worried about aggression issuses. He has a huge hutch with a playpen attached so there's plenty of room. He's very sweet but that's towards humans... He's never met another bunny before since he was a baby. Glad you and Candi get along so well. Sooooo, what do you think? There would definitely be a visit first, to see how things go.
Rabbits are absolutely delicious. My brother raised them for years and rabbit stew is the best.
woo hoo! I do too. I feel yah on that man!
